More Than Cut and Paste

Freeway Editions is starting 2015 off by featuring the work of Charlie Anderson. An emerging artist with an exciting new twist on pop art, Anderson creates detailed paintings by layering text, images, and appropriated forms to produce a new style of painting.

Charlie Anderson is a contemporary urban inspired painter. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2009 and since has been developing his unique style of pop-art painting. He employs imagery from magazines, flyers, advertising and political campaigns to create collage styled paintings that make commentary on our throwaway society. By layering images and deconstructing text and forms, Anderson highlights the ephemerality of life and art itself. Charlie Anderson investigates art’s precedent as documentation and explores that idea with his use of popular narratives. In addition to this his use of the female form not only references pin-up culture but also harkens back to classical portraiture.

By mixing the old and new Charlie Anderson has developed a painting practice that is both urban and pop. Take a look at these featured prints by the artist and explore more on his artist page.
